Highlighting a piece of Dumfries House
The challenge
One of the most iconic structures on the Dumfries Estate, with a most interesting history, we were delighted to be approached to provide a lighting scheme for The Temple Gate. Originally conceived as a gate house in the late 1700s, it is now magnificent once more thanks to a 10-month restoration project.

Key project requirements
- Bring to life the last of the restored onsite assets and provide focal points for the public.
- A high-power lighting solution to wash the walls with light.
- Precision optics to highlight architectural details.
- Sympathetic lighting scheme to emphasis the true nature and colour of the stone work.
The solution
The final scheme utilised a combination of Fira Pro Max performance projectors set back from the walls and Iria in-ground linear LED luminaire set closer to the structure to show the stonework’s surface texture and catch the upper ledge profiles. Both luminaires offer a wide choice of beam characteristics and choice of colour temperatures. Here, a combination of 10-degree (narrow) beam and 30-degree (medium) beam Iria products were used to tailor the design to the varying heights and widths of ‘The Temple’ structure.
A warm white 3000K colour temperature was selected for both products to enhance the natural blonde sandstone and sympathetically bathe the walls in light.
As well as providing the final scheme for the Temple Gate, Fira Pro Max was also chosen to bring to life the belvedere in the garden. By night, the lit effect is magnificent as the stunning architectural features are bathed in a 3000K warm white, providing a focal point for the walled gardens.
" I have found DW Windsor produce a very high specification of product. They understood the sensitive nature of this Grade A listed restoration and why the lighting should be unobtrusive when not in use. They designed and specified a lighting scheme that met the brief that was set and were very helpful in the design and providing technical data on their luminaire ranges. DW Windsor create a quality product and I will be using their products again "
