What is street light column testing?
Street light column testing involves a series of inspections and assessments designed to evaluate the structural integrity and compliance of lighting columns. These tests are crucial for identifying issues such as corrosion or structural weaknesses that could compromise the safety and effectiveness of your street lighting infrastructure. Regular testing ensures that your lighting columns are up to standard, mitigating the risk of failures that could lead to accidents or costly repairs.
Why is street light column testing needed?
Public safety
Ensures that columns can withstand environmental stresses like wind, rain, and physical impact, reducing the risk of collapse or other failures.
Structural integrity
Detects signs of wear, corrosion, or damage that could compromise the stability of the columns, preventing potential hazards before they occur.
Regulatory compliance
Verifies that street lighting infrastructure meets all relevant British Standards, avoiding potential legal and financial penalties.
Asset management
Our approach
Our street light column testing service is fully aligned with GN22, utilising non-destructive testing (NDT) methods designed specifically to detect and monitor corrosion levels and other defects. We use the latest technology and proven methodologies to ensure accurate, reliable results. Our team of qualified test engineers will work closely with you throughout the process, offering expert technical guidance to help you manage and maintain your assets effectively.

Our service package
Our service package includes four comprehensive tests that provide a thorough assessment of the structural integrity of your street lighting columns in line with industry standards. HERS, HEA and G39 accredited.
Visual inspection
A thorough visual inspection is a key initial step in assessing the condition of street lighting columns. Our qualified engineers perform an extensive examination of the external surfaces to identify visible signs of damage, wear, or corrosion. This includes checking for cracks, impact damage, and other structural weaknesses that may compromise the integrity of the column.
Eddy current test
An essential test for detecting subsurface defects within rooted steel columns. It measures column integrity using eddy currents from ground level down to 400mm below the base of the structure. The test helps identify areas below ground where corrosion or material loss may have weakened the column, ensuring its safety and guiding necessary maintenance or replacement.
Ultrasonic test
This test uses high-frequency sound waves to measure the thickness of street light columns and detect internal flaws. Suitable for both rooted and flange-mounted columns, it provides accurate thickness measurements for steel and aluminium structures. It also measures weld thickness on flange plates and swage joints, making it ideal for long-term monitoring.
Crack test
This testing method is used to detect surface and sub-surface cracks in welds and swage joints across a variety of materials, including steel and aluminium. It provides an additional layer of safety by identifying defects in critical areas. With minimal access required, it allows for efficient inspection of welded joints and other critical sections, helping to monitor and maintain long-term structural integrity.
